Volleyball Positions

Understanding what each player does on the court

Setter

Setter positioning and movement in volleyball

Example of setter positioning and movement during a play.

The setter runs the offense and decides which hitter will get the ball. This player needs leadership, quick thinking, and strong setting skills.

In the example above, you can see how the setter positions their body under the ball, uses their legs for power, and keeps their hands soft to control the set.

Outside Hitter

The outside hitter attacks from the left side and often passes in serve receive. This position usually requires all-around skills and consistency.

Middle Blocker

The middle blocker plays near the center of the net and focuses on blocking and quick attacks. This position demands speed, timing, and reading the opposing offense.

Opposite / Right Side

The opposite hitter attacks from the right side and often helps with blocking against the other team’s outside hitter. This player contributes both offensively and defensively.

Libero / Defensive Specialist

The libero is a back-row defensive player who wears a different jersey color. This player cannot attack the ball above the top of the net, but is important for serve receive and defense.
