Rotation Explained

A simple guide to one of the most confusing parts of volleyball for parents

What Is Rotation?

In volleyball, players rotate each time their team wins back the serve. This means each player moves one position clockwise on the court.

Why Do Teams Rotate?

Rotation is part of the official rules and gives players a chance to serve and play in different spots on the court. Teams still use systems so players can get into their best positions after the serve.

Front Row and Back Row

At any time, three players are in the front row and three are in the back row. Front-row players can attack and block at the net, while back-row players have different limitations.

Why Rotation Can Look Confusing

Parents often notice that players do not stay in the exact same spots after the rally begins. That is because players must start in legal rotational order, but after the serve they can move into their team’s preferred positions.
